How Do You Care For Freshly Cut Roses?
Extending the life of freshly cut roses is not hard, as long as you know a few tricks of the trade. Check out how to, below. FILL IT. Fill a vase ¾ full with lukewarm (not hot, not cold) water. Warm water is absorbed faster than cold water. FEED THEM. Add floral food. Floral food contains chemicals that kill bacteria and that balance the pH in the water. If you don’t have floral food, make your own by adding 3 tsp. of lemon-lime soda and 1 tsp. of bleach to the water. REMOVE THEM. Remove any bruised or ragged outer petals. Remove foliage that would fall below the water line to help keep bacteria at bay. CUT THEM. While holding under cool water, cut about an inch off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle with a sharp knife or pruners. Cutting under water keeps air bubbles from forming in the stem, allowing it to reach the flower at a quicker rate. STICK THEM IN. Transfer each rose in the vase immediately after cutting.
