Cast iron bathtubs are elegant yet simple and are reminiscent of a more romantic era. Many cast iron tubs are vintage and will require special care to avoid rust or other damage. Even a newer replica of an antique cast iron tub needs to be cleaned and cared for carefully, as some cleansers may be too harsh for the metal or could react with it in a harmful manner. With proper care, a cast iron bathtub can become an heirloom. Dampen the inner area of the tub. Sprinkle plain baking soda all around the surface of the tub. Dampen a plain sponge (without an abrasive or scrubbing side). Scrub the baking soda in the tub to remove grime and dirt safely. Use a mild cleanser, such as Bon Ami, for stubborn stains on the porcelain area inside the tub. Apply the cleanser to the damp sponge rather than the tub itself, and gently scrub the stained area.
