How Do You Care For Antiquarian Books?
Collecting antiquarian and secondhand books can be a very rewarding hobby, especially when you unearth a hidden gem in a dusty, old bookshop. Older books are often in a poor state of repair, due to use, or deterioration of their material over time. These treasures especially need tender loving care. Remove sticker marks. Bookshops have an annoying habit of slapping stickers on the front and back of books. In theory, these stickers are designed to be easily removed, but sometimes leave a sticky residue or mark, especially on older bindings. To remove such marks, use a product like Label Remover. Alternatively, use a hairdryer set on low to heat the residue until it rubs off easily. Gently rub the residue away with a cloth or fingers. Do not scratch at the residue! Remove and prevent mildew and mold. Books are made of organic matter, a prime target for mold and mildew to thrive on, especially in humid or damp conditions. If you have a mildewed book, wipe it off with a dry cleaning pad. G
