Fern trees are popular indoor and outdoor plants that give a garden or a space a lush, exotic and elegant quality. Tree ferns come in a number of different varieties, ranging from the Australian tree fern to many tropical varieties. What differentiates tree ferns from other types of fern is the trunk that elevates the fronds, or leaves, above the ground or soil level. Fern trees are not accustomed to cold temperatures and therefore grow well indoors as long as several precautions are taken. Make sure the fern tree soil is not too dense or soggy.
