Countersunk holes are designed so that a slender object, such as a post, can be inserted and fit perfectly; the top of the object will be level with the hole’s opening. Countersunk holes range from large holes used to hold posts to smaller versions which hold screws or bolts. No matter the size of the countersunk hole, calculating its volume always uses the same basic formula. Start by taking a few simple measurements to make the process of calculating the countersunk hole formula quick and easy. Measure the diameter of the hole. Divide this number by 2 to determine the radius of the hole. Measure the height, or depth of the hole from top to bottom. For small countersunk holes, insert a wire until it touches the bottom and mark the point at which the wire comes out of the hole. Measure the length of the end of the wire to the marked point to determine the height of the hole. Square the radius, then multiply the resulting number by pi (approximately 3.1416).
