Incidence rates describe the frequency of specific events. This type of statistic typically is used in evaluating the prevalence of injuries and illnesses in the work place. The ratio of incidence rates permits you to compare one place of business with another. Multiply the number of employees times the number of hours that an employee works during a week. For instance, if you have 500 employees and each employee works 40 hours per week, you would multiply 500 times 40 to get 20,000. Multiply your answer from Step 1 by the number of weeks worked in a year. For example, if the company operates 50 weeks in a year, multiply 50 times 20,000 to get 1,000,000. Divide the number of injuries and illnesses by your answer from Step 2 (total number of hours worked during the year). For instance, if you have 50 injuries or illnesses, you would divide 50 by 1,000,000 to get 0.00005. Multiply your answer from Step 3 by 200,000, which is the standard base of working hours for OSHA.
