How Do You Calculate The Midpoint Of A Salary Range?
The midpoint of a range of numbers is the number that is in the exact middle of the two numbers. For example, if the range was from 1 to 3, the midpoint will be 2. Midpoint is good for salaries because it finds the middle number of the salary, instead of the average salary. The middle of the range is not skewed by many salaries in the upper half of the range as an average would be. This is a good starting spot in salary negotiations. Determine the upper limit of the salary range. For example, consider a group of accountants, with $80,000 as the highest salary. Determine the lower limit of the salary range. Consider a low salary of $60,000 in our example group of accountants. Add the lower limit of the range to the higher limit of the range. In our example, $60,000 plus $80,000 equals $140,000. Divide the number calculated in Step 3 by two. In our example, $140,000 divided by 2 equals $70,000. This is the midpoint of the salary range.
