How Do You Calculate Speed With Distance & Time?
Speed is a derived unit that represents how fast an object is traveling. In the imperial system of measurement, speed is commonly measured in miles per hour or feet per second. To calculate speed, you need to know the distance covered and time elapsed. For example, if you wanted to know how fast you drove, you would need to know how far you traveled and how long it took. Measure the amount of distance covered. For shorter distance, a measuring tape can be used. If you are driving, however, you can use the trip odometer to measure how far you’ve traveled. Measure the time it took to cover the distance using a watch. Divide the distance covered by the time it took to cover the distance to calculate the speed of travel. For example, if you drove 100 miles and it took you 2.5 hours to cover the distance, you would divide 100 by 2.5 to find that you were traveling at a speed of 40 mph.
