How Do You Calculate Hip Rafter Length Using The Distance Formula?
Roof measurement is both an art and a science. Good techniques are important and using your head can prevent lost time and injury. It is not always easy to run a tape measure diagonally down a hip rafter (the tape tends to fall off to the left, or the right.) It can also be difficult to hook the lower tip of the hip rafter with your tape measure (the hook just slips one way or the other). There are easier measurements that can be used to calculate this distance. A tape measure can be slipped down the front and side slopes until the hooked tip of the tape measure catches the eaves. Measurements can also be taken while standing back from the front and the side of the house. The length of the hip rafter can then be calculated. Stand far enough back from the front of the house so that you can see the point where the hip rafters come together with the top ridge. Find the horizontal distance from where the hip rafters meet to where one of the hip rafters meets up with the corner of the eaves
