How Do You Calculate A Mean Value?
The mean value is essentially an average of all the numbers in a set or group. The mean value is different than the median, the mode or the range, which are other methods of calculating specific values in a set of numbers. Calculating the mean value for a set of numbers is an easy operation that can be performed in three quick steps. Look at the set of numbers for which you wish to determine the mean value. Count the total amount of numbers. For example, in a group of numbers including the numbers 4, 9, 8 and 3, you would note that there are four numbers in the list. Add all of your numbers together. In the example above, you would add 4, 9, 8 and 3 to get a total of 24. Divide the sum by the total amount of numbers added together. Continuing the above example, you would divide 24 by 4 (which was the original amount of numbers added together) and get a mean, or average, of 6.
