The most essential element of a collectible dealer’s success is buying stock at the right price. Most of the time, this means negotiating with a private party that you’ve contacted through a newspaper or online. Step 1 Contact a seller. Look for people selling collections (of whatever your interest may be) in local papers and online. You can also place ads yourself seeking to buy. Step 2 Phone contact. Be somewhat vague about how much you’ll pay. If you put a figure in someone’s head that turns out to be more than his stuff is worth, you’ll have to get around that later. Or, they might just reject you over the phone before you’ve seen the items. In person, you have a better chance of selling a lowball offer. I’ll sometimes say, “I pay anywhere from .25 to several dollars each, depending on condition.” That gives you some wiggle room later.
