How Do You Build Wood Pasture Gates?
Before metal gates were the norm for pasture openings, people built pasture gates from wood. A simple wood pasture gate can be built using 1×6 lumber and eight penny nails. Wooden gates are simple to build and few tools are needed to complete the project. Materials can be purchased either at a lumber yard or a home improvement center. Cut two of the 1×6 lumber boards in half, making four 5-foot pieces. Lay two 5-foot pieces vertically on a flat surface approximately 9 feet apart. Lay four of the 1×6 lumber boards horizontally across the 5-foot uprights. Make the boards flush with the edges of the upright boards. Nail the boards into place using eight penny nails. Use four nails to attach each board on each end. Lay one of the remaining 5-foot pieces angled diagonally from one corner to the middle of the fence. Nail into place using four nails on each end. Repeat with the last 5-foot piece on the other end of the fence. Turn the entire gate over and pound any protruding nails flat again
