These unique shelves are made from old drawers and will help you get that “shabby chic” look on a budget. Clean the drawer thoroughly with a damp cloth. Use a mild soap if needed, but be sure to rinse it off well. Clean off all dust, dirt and grease spots, or your paint and varnish will not absorb properly. Use sandpaper to lightly sand the outside of the drawer. If you plan to stain or varnish the drawer, you must sand the entire outer layer, down to the raw wood. Paint, stain or varnish your drawer. Colored stains, such as blue or red, are excellent choices for this project because they retain the natural wood grain. You may also use glossy or matte-finish paints, or use scrap paper to decoupage the interior. Allow the drawer to dry completely. This usually takes 24 hours.
