Built-in bookshelves are the ultimate organizer: not only do they provide a “home” for books that might otherwise be scattered about, they provide a specific, permanent location within a residence for the storage and display of books. While freestanding bookcases might be moved from place to place within a room, or between several rooms, the built-in bookshelf never strays from its appointed place and becomes–much like any built-in–a focal point in the home. Remove any electrical outlets, switches, or electrical fixtures from the area of the wall which will be covered by the bookshelf and remove the baseboard and quarter-round floor moulding from the space where the back of the bookshelf will be fastened to the wall. Locate the studs in the wall with a stud-finder. Mark the stud location with a chalk line on the wall, from ceiling to floor.
