How Do You Build Shelves Inside Wall Joists?
Unfinished buildings, such as garages, outbuildings or sheds, can waste a lot of storage space by not utilizing the space between the wall joists or studs. Building a simple set of shelves for storage will let you store small items out of the way and allow for safe use of the building. You’ll stay organized and easily find the items you’re looking for when you want them. Measure the distance between the joists you want to install the shelves between. Measure from the inside edges of the joists. We’ll call the distance the “shelf width.” Using a handsaw or power saw, cut a rectangular piece of 1/2-inch plywood that measures 72 inches tall and the same width as the shelf. Lay two 72-inch pieces of 1-by-4-inch board on the ground, on their narrow edges and parallel to each other, separated by the shelf width.
