Privacy fence rails need to be strong, durable and weatherproof. After all, they will be subjected to outside conditions 365 days of the year, and provide the backbone of your privacy fence. Most fence posts should be placed in the ground at 4-foot intervals, although this may vary with designs and modifications. Double check the length of your two-by-fours. Although you have purchased two-by-fours that are 4 feet long, they do not always come from the lumber yard at that exact measurement. There may be variations from piece to piece. Adjust the length of any two-by-fours, if necessary. Use a circular saw to cut at the 4-foot mark. Mark the points of attachment. With your tape measure, make a line 18 inches down from the top of each fence pole, and 18 inches up from the bottom of each fence pole.
