Mice can damage homes and gardens, destroying wiring, food and walls, as well as contaminating areas. They will breed in large numbers if not checked. A mouse trapper has many choices of trapping devices, divided into lethal and nonlethal, but both will need good bait. Simple lethal traps include a rock and stick apparatus. Nonlethal traps can be made from wire mesh. Peanut butter is one of the most successful baits for mice, in part because it lasts longer than cheese or other baits. Chunky peanut butter offers mice pieces of nut which they will try to carry off, triggering some traps. Other baits include gumdrops, sunflower and related seeds, cherry pits, and bread and butter. Perhaps the oldest lethal trap uses a stone with a flat side, a stick, a string and bait. Prop up the stone with the flat side down and use the stick to hold it up on one edge.
