When you build a wooden deck with floor boards higher than 18 inches off the ground, you should consider installing a gate, too. This will help ensure that children won’t fall down the steps. If you have not previously worked with wood, installing a gate can be challenging. If you can handle the task yourself, make sure you have the proper tools and materials before you begin. Measure the distance between the fence posts where you will install the gate. Cut two two-by-fours to measure 1 inch less than the distance between the posts. Use a saw for this procedure. Divide the distance between the fence posts by 5 1/2 inches. If necessary, round this figure up to the nearest whole number. This is the number of pickets that you will need for the gate.
