Want to update your closet without paying a fortune for pre-designed “systems” or wire racks? Look no further! Remove any old shelving. Mark the height of the new shelves on the wall with a level. If you want one top shelf and a rod the standard height of the shelf is 70 inches. For multiples I usually go with 36″ and for a pantry I make a few different sizes. It helps to sketch out what you want it to look like before you begin. If your closet is wide you may need to install a support wall in the middle. I did this by making a set of shelves that took up about a third of the closet and screwing the wall into the actual shelves as well as to a support on the wall. Measure the depth and length of the wall. Start at one end and do one piece at time so that you can re-measure between pieces. Cut the 1×2’s to fit.
