A custom box may be necessary if store-bought boxes don’t fit the intended space, and you can save money by building the box yourself. Subwoofer boxes should be made out of 3/4-inch medium density fiberboard (MDF). Measure the space where the subwoofer box will go and determine the size of the box using a tape measure. Create a cut list, or sketch, of needed parts. You must have a top, bottom, back, two sides and a front. The length of the top, back, bottom and front should be 1 1/2-inches less that the overall width of the box because they will be affixed with a butt joint to the 3/4-inch sides. If your overall box is 30 inches, these parts should be cut 28 1/2-inches long. Measure, mark and cut out each part using a circular saw.
