How Do You Build And Use A Pendulum?
Pendulums have many uses, ranging from timekeeping, science experiments, keeping the beat in music and even as thrill rides. A simple pendulum can be made easily and quickly using two basic elements: A mass (or “bob”) suspended from a string. • Place the ruler on the edge of a desk or table so that it protrudes about 10cm/4 inches off the desk. • Place a heavy book on top of the ruler. • Cut a piece of string to your desired length and tie it to the end of the ruler. • Tie the other end of the piece of string to a suitable “mass”. The mass is the weighted part of the pendulum that swings in a constant motion when released. Any item that has some weight to it but not enough to break the string should be suitable. Such things could include a tennis ball, a small roll of tape etc. • Secure the mass with tape, if necessary. • Once you have finished the above steps, your pendulum is now ready for use. Pull the mass back and release it to start its movement. You should observe that the pendu
