Fortunately, building a gate is one of a homeowner’s easiest improvement projects. Remove the old gate. You may decide to keep the hinges if they are still in good condition. Measure the width of the opening for your gate. The gate must be smaller than the width by 1/2 inch on either side (meaning if the opening is 6 feet long, the width of the gate is 5 feet 11 inches). Measure the height of your gate to determine what lengths of wood to cut. Cut two pieces of 2-by-4 1 inch shorter than the total width of the gate, using the saw. Cut two pieces of 2-by-4 3 inches shorter than the height measurement for your gate. Build a rectangular frame out of these pieces with the width pieces on top of the length pieces.
