Adding columns also adds space distinctions without giving the feeling of confinement, keeping that open floor plan feeling with separations. You can build a wooden column that is hallow inside to put up next to a wall, or you can build one to cover ugly posts that come in older homes. Rip the MDF or plywood into four pieces of equal size. For this example, we will rip each one 8 feet tall to 1 foot wide. Attach three of the pieces together using wood carpenter’s glue and nails.
