How Do You Build A Window Seat With MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard)?
One of the best features of the window seat is its versatility. It can be used to decorate a bay window while also serving a more practical use such as storage. Medium-density fiberboard, or MDF, is inexpensive, easy to paint and leaves a smooth finish and feel. The one drawback with MDF is the ease with which the threads of a screw strip the wood. For best results, use a variable speed drill with a Phillips head screw tip. Set the fence of the table saw at 24 inches. Rip the sheet of MDF at this setting. Next, set the fence of the table saw at 16 inches and rip the remaining portion of the MDF. You should have two 96-inch-long pieces of MDF, one 16 inches wide and the second 24 inches wide. Set the fence of the table saw at 28 1/2 inches. Cut one piece from the 16-inch-wide MDF. This is the bottom of the window seat. Next, set the fence of the table saw at 24 inches and cut two pieces. These are the ends of the window seat. You will have a piece left over that is about 19 inches long.
