They can be made in any length. All you need in accomplishing this task is a few tools, lumber, wood stain or paint and hardware. Determine the length of the rail you are building. For every 2 feet of railing, you need one vertical 4-by-4 post. Add one on the final number for the end post. Cut out the appropriate number of 4-foot 4-by-4s if you have longer sections of lumber.
