Make your writing sound more interesting by adding adverbs to your sentences. Adverbs are words that describe or modify verbs. Add descriptive words in front of your verbs so the reader can picture the actions you are describing. Describe an action by adding an adverb to the verb. For instance, saying, “The dog ran,” describes a dog performing an action, but it isn’t very descriptive. Change the sentence by adding different adverbs after the verbs. The sentence can read, “The dog runs slowly,” or “The dog runs quickly.” The reader can now picture the dog moving a particular speed. Recognize an adverb in a sentence. Adverbs often have the letters “ly” at the end of them, like slowly, quickly or abruptly. Place adverbs after verbs or in adverb clauses. You want the adverb close to the verb that it is describing.
