How Do You Build A Sand Water Filter?
Using a layer of sand to filter water through is nothing new. This method has been used since antiquity for removing many of the solid impurities in water that ancient peoples used for drinking. This is a very simple and fun experiment for you to conduct with your kids. They’ll be fascinated by seeing how such ordinary materials can clean a sample of dirty water. Collecting some of the materials from the outdoors for this project will make for a great outing with them, as well. Take your kids to a park, preserve or hiking area where there’s a body of water present. Bring several small coffee cans with lids along. Ask your children to fill one of the cans with water from the pond after you’ve finished your hike. Fill a second can with some sand. Have the children search around for small pebbles or gravel to fill the third can with. Put lids on all of the cans and take the treasures home.
