Many people think you need wet sand to build a sand castle, but very wet sand won’t hold its shape. It’s best to build out of dry sand. Then you can add the amount of water you need for each element of your castle. Pick a location for your castle. Make sure the area is close enough to the ocean so it’s easy to haul water, but also far enough away that the tide won’t destroy your castle before it’s done. Use sand that is fine. Coarse sand is much more difficult to shape. Pour a few buckets of water onto the area where you want to build. Then pack the sand down. This will create a solid base on which to build your sand castle. Create a mound of dry sand on top of your base. Build your basic castle and turrets by putting sand into a bucket or plastic mold.
