Building a rock pond with a fountain requires a decent sized section of ground, a pond liner and plenty of rocks. You can then use any type of fountain pump inside the rock pond to create a truly spectacular garden scene. Outline the pond on the ground using spray paint. Dig out the rock pond using a shovel, then tamp down the bottom of the pond sufficiently until the dirt is hard packed. Cut and lay down the pond liner over and around the bed of the pond. The pond liner should be thick and sturdy to resist breaking under the weight of the rocks. Lay rocks carefully on the pond liner and around the edges, forming a complete rock barrier on all sides of the pond. Assemble the rock pond fountain by connecting the water pump to a fountain head and biofilter, if necessary. Set the water pump into a small basin or flower pot, and layer rocks around the pump to secure it in place.
