Many people misuse the term “portal site” to refer to any website homepage. While a regular homepage acts as the entry page into a given website, a portal site acts as starting point to all website information. Portal sites can be either horizontal or vertical. Horizontal portal sites, such as Yahoo or MSN, contain all site information and website links to act as a starting point for all other website content. Vertical portal sites, such as Garden.com or Fool.com aim to be the starting point for a particular niche. Make a list of all types of content necessary for your portal site. If you are creating a horizontal portal, you will need news, stock quotes, weather, calendars, search engine and email all contained within your portal.
