How Do You Build A Model Volcano?
Creating a model volcano is an educational rite of passage for young science explorers. Volcanoes are basically large vents on the Earth’s surface that allow molten rock, debris and gases to escape from the planet’s interior. Real lava can reach a scorching 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Model volcanoes make excellent, exciting science projects for classrooms, science fairs and personal science discovery. Create homemade play dough by kneading together the flour, salt, cooking oil and 2 cups of water. Add brown food coloring to create a dirt color. Continue kneading until the mixture is firm. Mold the play dough around the plastic bottle to form a mountain. Create lava channels by pressing indents in the play dough. Add plastic trees and other vegetation if desired. Pour red food coloring, vinegar, soap and 60 ml of water into the bottle. Wrap the baking soda in the tissue square. To create an eruption, drop the square into the bottle.
