How Do You Build A Model Active Volcano?
There are three major types of volcanoes: shield, composite (cone) and caldera. A shield volcano oozes magma from a central vent. Those in Hawaii are shield volcanoes. The composite or cone volcano has the stereotypical cone shape. Examples are Mt. St. Helens or Mt. Vesuvius. Calderas are the largest and most destructive. A caldera volcano formed Yellowstone National Park approximately 600,000 years ago. A cone volcano can be made with simple craft items and a few chemicals from home. Mix the flour, salt, cooking oil and water together in a large mixing bowl. Place the two-liter bottle in the center of the roasting pan. Leave the top on the bottle to prevent any dough from getting inside. Use the salt dough to form the shape of the cone volcano. Mix more dough as needed. Allow the salt dough to try overnight. Remove the top from the bottle. Pour seven cups of warm water into the bottle. Add ten drops of red food coloring. Add six drops of liquid detergent. Add two tablespoons of baking
