Launch ramps are an integral part of street skateboarding and have roots in the beginnings of the sport. Most long-time skateboarders can remember building their first launch ramp and how it improved their enjoyment of skateboarding. Launch ramps are one of the easiest and least expensive skateboard ramps to build. And, once completed, a launch ramp can transform any flat, smooth surface into an exciting place to skateboard. Constructing a proper launch ramp requires the proper tools, materials and site selection. Begin by drawing the sides of the ramp on the thicker sheet of plywood, the 3/4 inch sheet. Using string and a pencil to act as a compass set between 8 to10 feet in diameter, draw the transition (the curve) of the ramp onto the plywood sheet. Use the jigsaw to follow the lines and cut out the sides. Cut the 2x4s and use wood screws to secure them to the sides as joists. Place them 8 inches apart up the transition.
