Ant farms provide a great learning tool for all ages and help children get excited about insects. Ant farms allow you to observe the ants as they work, eat and reproduce. The intricate social hierarchy of the ant world keeps many people engrossed for long periods of time. A plethora of commercially made ant farms exist on the market today, but creating your own ant farm can be cheap or even free. Find two glass containers, one of which is slightly smaller than the other. Place the smaller container inside the larger one. The space between the outside of the smaller container and the walls of the larger one will be your “ant viewing area.” Dig around an ant hill in your yard using a garden trowel. Scoop the soil with the ants carefully into your bucket. Dig down into the soil further to find eggs, larvae and a queen ant.
