Chess sets can be plain and simple or very elaborate. They can be inexpensive or very costly. However, one characteristic of chess sets that is probably the most flexible is the fact that almost any theme can be adopted for the pieces. You can easily make this red and black playing-card chess set using very simple materials readily available from most discount and department stores. Good places to pick up cheap supplies for this project include yard sales and thrift shops. Your favorite pizza palace will probably be happy to donate an unused extra-large pizza box to your effort. The box will serve not only as the playing board but will provide storage for the chess pieces as well.
