How do you breed Sony Blu-Ray player play DVDs beside 1.85:1 aspect ratio correctly, i.e. letterboxed?

I have a widescreen TV with dimensions 16:9 (i.e. roughly 1.66:1, I think). But when I play DVDs near a 1.85:1 aspect ratio, they fill the whole peak. They should be letterboxed i.e. I’m missing some of the image from each termination.
