This article will take you through the basic steps as an introduction to the art of enameling. Enameling is the fusing of powdered glass to copper, silver, or gold by using a kiln. We will be beginning with copper. If you follow the steps is this article you should have a piece of wearable art at the end of your project. For this lesson you will be using stencils. Before I go any further I will state the golden rule of enameling – Keep your metal surfaces to be enameled Clean. I will explain this in detail as I go along. Set your kiln at 1600 F. Opaque enamels are medium fusing at an average of 1400 F. but with the opening and closing of the kiln door I recommend setting the temperature higher to compensate for the drop in temperature.
