How Do You Bed A Rifle Stock?
• Take apart the rifle, including removing the trigger. • Fill any recesses, such as any pin holes or the trigger slot, which may impede the action of the stock when the epoxy dries. Use modeling clay for this step. • Apply 2 layers of electrical tape to the recoil lug, the barrel and the action. Test the fit of the barrel to make sure there’s a clearance between the stock and the barrel. Retain the clearance necessary for the action to settle after the recoil by making sure the tape goes a little beyond the port. The tape will help preserve the parts you do not wish to alter as well as keep them free of epoxy. • Rough up the surface of the stock to remove oil from the area that will be bedded. Use a Dremel and a grinder attachment, or the combination of a scrape and a chisel also works well. • Cut or grind the slot for the recoil to add 1/8-inch clearance all the way around. Be careful not to mar the wood as you do so. Test whether the barreled stock fits easily. If not, grind or cut
