Practicing law on a Native American Indian Reservation can be a challenging but rewarding experience. While the practice of law in the United States federal and state courts usually requires a license or a court’s permission, some Tribal courts do not as long as you are only practicing before those courts. The reason for this is that Native American tribes are, to some extent, sovereign and are entitled to determine the qualifications to practice law on their lands. In any event, even in Tribal courts you will need either a license (e.g., the Navajo Nation has its own bar examination and legal requirements to practice), or express permission of Tribal court judges.
