Archaeology is the scientific search to understand how people in the past interacted with their environment. This is done by excavating and analyzing artifacts. You don’t need an advanced degree to participate in archaeology–any enthusiast can become an amateur archaeologist. There are many opportunities available for volunteer archaeological workers and you must be willing to work hard and get dirty. Determine what area of archaeology interests you (cultures, area of the world, artifacts) and study that subject area. Subscribe to archaeology magazines and journals. Keep current on the newest advances in research and discoveries. Research digs that allow volunteers to participate. Archaeology involves a lot of physical labor and dirty work and many archaeological digs allow volunteers to help cover this need for labor. Get digging.
