Air traffic controller candidates have to be under 30 years of age. Step 2 Confirm that you are a U.S. citizen. You have to be a citizen to be accepted as an air traffic controller candidate by the FAA. Step 3 Complete your education at an FAA approved educational institution with an air traffic-related field of study. Currently there are only 14 schools that the FAA accepts candidates from.
