Ad copywriters have to know all about language and imagery — and about marketing to their target audience. You can write the snappiest copy in the world, but it will fall flat if readers or listeners don’t connect with it. For example, an older generation of Coke drinkers can identify with a slogan like “Relax With The Pause That Refreshes,” but younger ones relate to something more active like “The Coke Side of Life.” You need to be versatile as well as creative to succeed as an ad writer. Step 1 Listen, look and write. Wherever you go, think in terms of advertising and developing your skills. A good way to practice is to read or listen to an ad and write down other ideas that make the point or sell the product as — or even more — effectively. Step 2 Apply to attend a journalism or communications program at a college or university. Specialize in advertising or marketing, or at least take every elective class available in those fields.
