Veterinary pharmacologists play a leading role in the health care of animals. They study drugs, often in a lab or pharmacy environment, to determine the effect those drugs have on animals. You must have a strong math and science background and hold a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree to be a vet pharmacologist. There are universities across the country that offer this specialization. Maintain a high grade point average, even in high school. Admission to veterinary school is very competitive. Pay particular attention to math and science classes. Find a place to volunteer. Contact local veterinary offices and animal shelters. You may even find opportunities at a farm, a zoo or an animal sanctuary. Attend an accredited four year veterinary medicine program. Veterinary pharmacologists have the same initial veterinary training as a regular veterinarian. Complete an accredited program of veterinary study at the graduate level. This is where you will specialize in veterinary pharmacology.
