California Sheriffs have the opportunity to work in very diverse communities. Sheriffs are assigned to counties that can vary greatly in size, demographics and natural environment. The career of a sheriff officer can be very rewarding, and includes a high salary, great benefits and the opportunity to move to different locations throughout the state. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, patrolling, crime scene investigation, recruitment, canine detail and other duties as needed by the county of employment, such as regional transit patrol or correctional assignments. Here are a few suggestions on how to become a sheriff in California. Step 1 Take and pass either the Peace Officers’ Standards and Training (POST) exam and obtain certification, or hold a POST Academy Certificate of Completion.
