How Do You Become A School Guidance Counselor?
School guidance or education counselors fulfill an important role by working with students and families from elementary through high school. At the elementary level, a school guidance counselor will work with students to determine special needs, address emotional or social issues, reduce bullying, and identify family problems. A guidance counselor at the high school level will focus more on academics and assisting students in preparation for college admissions and future careers. School guidance counselors will also conduct assemblies and seek to educate students on important topics, such as substance abuse. Obtain a bachelor’s and then a master’s degree from an accredited college or university. Major in child psychology or counseling. This should include courses such as human growth and development and testing/appraisal. Elective courses in education are also useful.
