Although there are no formal degree programs to become a police sketch artist, there are steps to take towards a career. Step 1 Take classes in art including drawing and sculpture. Some schools have composite drawing classes. Also take computer classes. Some law enforcement agencies use computer-generated drawings. Step 2 Enroll in communication and psychology classes. Police sketch artists do not only have to be artists they have to extract the information from a witness or victim. This can be difficult. A victim may be in a fragile emotional state and it is the job of the police sketch artist to help the victim remember details without traumatizing him or her further.
