How Do You Become A Peer Counselor (Middle School)?
• Have a good reputation. Never mess up at school. Never cause any trouble & strive hard to earn positive feedback from the faculty & the students as well. Nobody likes a rebel to be his counselor! • Know yourself. Know your weaknesses, limitations, & capabilities. Impose more discipline in yourself. Look good, neat, & presentable. • Be friendly. • Listen. Don’t just hear, learn how to listen. Peer counseling is all about listening skills. Make sure you have one. If not, just practice. • Read actions. Remember, actions speak louder than words. It is important for a peer counselor to have some knowledge in neurolinguistics. With this, you can easily tell what the person is trying to express & whether he/she is lying or not. • Learn when to act and when not to. It doesn’t mean you have to fake it. Use hand gestures & more facial expressions to make the person feel comfortable. Be trustworthy. Never spill anything you have heard from the person you are counseling even to your best friend.
