Pedorthists work with footwear to correct problems primarily with the foot, but other lower limb problems as well. By selecting, creating, or modifying footwear and special devices, pedorthists help people maximize their mobility. Pedorthists work closely with podiatrist. Podiatrists use casts, molds or 3-D computer imaging to create a model of the foot. This is sent to the pedorthist with instructions. The pedorthist then fits, manufactures, adusts, or modifies pedorthic devices which will further the objective set out by the podiatrist. The jobs of pedorthists and orthotists overlap to some degree, but generally speaking, pedorthists are more focused on what happens from the ankle downwards. This is somewhat of a generalization, but can aid in separating out the two professions as you explore careers.
