Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) provide emergency care before a patient is taken to a hospital. They work for hospitals, fire departments and ambulance companies. There are three levels of EMT certification: Basic (EMT I) and Intermediate (EMT II and III). All 50 states have certification requirements for the three levels. In order to maintain certification, EMTs have to be registered every two years, be practicing and meet continuing education requirements. Becoming nationally registered follows the pattern of state certification. Step 1 You must be 18 years old to become a national registered emergency medical technician. Step 2 Before becoming nationally registered at an EMT level of expertise, you must be state certified at that level.
