A journeyman plumber works under the supervision and guidance of a master plumber. Once you become a journeyman plumber, you have proved that you have a working knowledge of plumbing systems and can perform a variety of duties, including installation, repair and maintenance. Step 1 Work for a licensed master plumber as an apprentice. Before you are eligible to become a journeyman plumber, you must have worked as an apprentice with a master plumber. Apprentices do not have to go through any type of certification and can be hired off the street. Each state has different requirements for the working hours required to work as an apprentice.
